Start from Valbonnais. A steady ascent deep in the valley leads you to Entraigues, then Chantelouve, in the heart of a beautifully preserved valley along the border of Ecrins national park.
Learn moreFrom Valbonnais, take the D526 towards Entraigues. At the Entraigues intersection, turn left towards Le Perier and Chantelouve/Col d’Ornon.
Take the gradual ascent up to Chantelouve, where the slope flattens out again in preparation for the final climb up Col d'Ornon with a series of zigzags! From La Chalp hamlet, observe the major effects of erosion from passing fords: mudslides are very frequent here, and many attempts by man to develop the area have given in to the forces of Mother Nature. Stop for a stroll through Europe’s largest white alder forest, a fragile, protected area on the flat part of the pass. Descend on the same route.
